Bristle Dartboard is usually made from Sisal fibers or boar bristles, and they have the longest life, because the bristled construction allows the dart board to be “self-healing,” in that when the dart is retrieved the fibers return to they’re original position, and only the tiniest hole is created. Small bundles of sisal fibres of the same length were bundled together. The bundles were then compressed into a disk and bound with a metal ring. It was an instant success, as the darts made little or no damage to the board—they just parted the fibres when they entered the board; this type of board was more durable and required little maintenance.
The Bristle dartboard was first invented by Nodor in the 1930's and has been going strong ever since. The board is made from sisal fibres, the same stuff they make rope out of, and the best sisal fibres come from East Africa where the Nodor factory is based. The fibres are gathered together in small clumps and then the clumps are then compressed together and held in place with a steel band to form the dartboard. When the dart hits the board, it simply parts the strands of sisal apart, but the compression of the fibres keep the dart in the board. When the dart is removed the fibres come together again so there is minimal if any damage to the board. It is said to be self-healing. Also the board can last a very long time and there is nothing quite like the thud on a bristle dartboard when the dart hits it.Modern dartboards are made of sisal fibres; cheap boards are sometimes made of coiled paper. However, several types of sisal fibre are used in dartboards today, originating from East Africa, Brazil and China. Those sisal from Brazil are called Brazil sisal fibre, from Kenya are called Kenya sisal fibre, from Hainan Province of China are called sisal fibre.
